==FIS Live-Timing==

The ''FIS Live-Timing'' tab allows you send your race information to FIS in real-time. Races must be registered with FIS to do this and it takes some work and monitoring to make sure everything is happening smoothly. But, the end result on the FIS web site looks very professional. And, it can be done at the same time as using Live-Timing.com.

==Registering Races==

You will need to have an account with FIS to do this. If you don't already have an account send an email to [mailto:it@fisski.com it@fisski.com] requesting a login and password.

* You'll login via the "Member Section" at the top of the FIS site ([http://www.fis-ski.com/ www.fis-ski.com]). The take the link for "Live Races Registration".

* Select "Alpine" from the drop down menu.

* You then have access to set up your test race(s), or search and then add your event.

Note:

* Search by any Codex in your series.

* When adding include as much information as possible with start times. You can change these later if needed.

* Please select Split Second from the drop down of timing solutions.

* Once you have everything correct click "Add". It will move from the search list to the "Your live races" section.

At this point you're ready to go!

==Steps to Managing The Race==

All the options are on the FIS Live-Timing tab of the software:

* You MUST start by clicking on the box to "Send data to FIS Live". Once checked it will maintain a constant connection to FIS. If the connection is lost it will continually attempt to reestablish the connection.

* Start by taking the option in the "Other Options" menu to clear all data (bottom option).

* The key thing that MUST be done is get each run ready before that run starts. Once that's done everything should happen automatically.

There are a number of steps that need to be taken which are listed individually in the "Other Options" menu. But to simplify the process they're grouped along with instructions via the "Set for 1st Run" and "Set for 2nd Run" buttons.

Sometimes running this step doesn't get everything set correctly. (we currently don't know why but just do it again and it may work). The run MUST be set correctly and the start list loaded for that run as explained on that screen otherwise the data won't be dealt with properly. Look at that screen carefully.

Messages may be sent via the button on this screen or via the button on the timing screen. If sending from the timing screen messages will go to Live-Timing.com and FIS Live at the same time (from the timing screen be sure to check the box labeled "send message").

Caution: Be sure not to send data to FIS from system A and system B. This has been done by mistake and will result in some results being off slightly!

==Practice/Test Race==

With anything to do with Ski Racing practice is the best way to get comfortable. You may do this with the FIS Live interface via test races.

If you have your own account with FIS you may have 1 or more test races. See the details on your account under "Alpine Skiing" "Your test races". Simply set the codex and password accordingly and you can monitor the race via the link on the connection parameter ("i" in a circle) button.

The National / FIS Software should be used for any alpine, snowboard, cross country, or masters events that are sanctioned by a national governing body (USSA, ACA, NZSA etc.), or FIS.

The software has everything needed to manage races and events, from processing entries through producing final results. There's no simple path to follow through the software, since needs vary from event to event. You need to know what you need to get done, and the tool to do it, is most likely available in the software.

==Why use Split Second?==

Split Second, Inc. started in 1990, creating software solutions for many sports, primarily ski racing. This has remained our main focus since that time. We are the main supplier of ski race software in the US and many other countries worldwide.

For Split Second, development and support of our software is not a hobby;
this is what we do, day-in and day-out.

We maintain relationships with key organizations and encourage feedback from users. It is with help through these relationships that our products remain cutting edge and compliant.

Emphasis has always been placed on ease of use. Typically, after a small amount of practice with the software, users can intuitively find how to do the needed tasks.

==Just Try It !==

The best way to get familiar with the software is to install it and start "playing".

Simply download the latest software from the [http://www.splitsecond.com/software.php web page] and install it. You don't need to buy or pay to use non-timing features. This means that you may use the software on as many computers as you want, and do anything you want, except interface to and manage timing, for free!

You may also connect timing equipment and practice timing without paying for anything. (The only restriction without purchasing a [[Keys & Licenses|Key & License]] is that you'll be able to stay in a timing screen for only two minutes.)

==Which Software?==

=====National / FIS=====

The [[National FIS Software : Introduction|National / FIS Software]] should be used for any alpine, snowboard, cross country, or masters events that are sanctioned as by a national governing body (USSA, ACA, NZSA etc.), or FIS. It's more rule-bound than the Club Software because sanctioned events are more structured.

At the lower levels, races sometimes don't fit well into the sanctioned rules, but every effort should be made to use the National / FIS Software for the event, so that the data can be made available for scoring or record keeping.

Please contact Split Second if you need help or advice with this.

If the event isn't a FIS, USSA, ACA, NZSA, etc.; use the Club Software.

=====Club=====

The [[Club Software : Introduction|Club Software]] is the simplest to use, yet probably the most powerful. It can be used to time virtually any alpine ski race, as well as be used for cross country, running, mountain biking, triathlon, or other individual, wave or mass start events.

=====Toolbox=====

The [[Toolbox : Introduction|Toolbox]] is companion software currently under development that will interface to both the National / FIS and the Club Software.
The Toolbox runs on a separate computer and communicates with the other software via a network. It's initial use will be as an announcer monitor, but will allow remote data entry and editing as an option.

==System Requirements==

The processor and memory requirements for Split Second's software are very modest, given the power of most computers.

If your computer was made in the last five years, there should be no problems with computer power. This software requires no more than 50Mb of hard disk space. Data files (races) are so small that you could typically store thousands of them on a computer before running out of storage space.

Basically, if other programs run fine, Split Second's software will run fine.

It's important that you have a good anti-virus software and keep it up to date. PC's have an annoying ability to get increasing clogged up with "stuff" that will eventually cripple even the most powerful processor. If your computer gets increasingly slow, you should consider clearing it out and reinstalling Windows from scratch. This should be done only by someone who knows what they're doing!

====Operating System====

Currently, Windows 11 and 10 are recommended. The software should work without problems with earlier versions of Windows but are not technically "supported" simply because we don't have any computers with earlier versions of the operating system in our office.

There is not a Mac version, but some users have successfully had the software running on a Mac with PC emulation software.

====Connections for Hardware====

If the software is being used with a [[Keys & Licenses|Software Key]] to enable timing features; a USB port will be needed for the key.

Most timing equipment attaches to the computer via old style serial connections. These are nine pin, D-connectors; but unfortunately, these very rarely come with computers (especially laptops).
The solution is to use adapters to get the needed serial ports. It's a matter of preference as to how you do this; the two main ways are either via a PC card (if your computer has one) or via a USB to serial adapters.

The number of USB ports needed can quickly add up. Depending on your needs and configuration, you may need a port for each of the following: software key, timer, scoreboard, printer, mouse, keyboard, and/or memory stick.

Having a computer with a number of USB ports may be helpful. More can be added by using a USB hub.

* The same license is used for the National/FIS, Club, and Toolbox software interchangeably. In other words, a FIS race could be timed in the morning and a club race in the afternoon with the same key.

24 Hour Online Licenses

==Overview==

A 24 Hour Online License is a way to temporarily Enable the Timing features of the software without the usual requirement of a Key.

They are included free with licenses 6 months or longer or may be purchased.

These are incredibly useful for situations like:
* That one race that's scheduled after your license has expired.
* That day where you're hosting more races at once than you have keys and licenses.
* That race that needs backup timing that you hadn't planned on.
* That emergency situation where you lost your key or there's a problem with the key.

The 24 hour license is a code, something like ABCDE-12345. They are given in the order confirmation once payment is made.

These are given free with licenses purchased (with or without a key) as follows:
* A 5 year license will receive 10 x 24 Hour Licenses
* A 1 year license will receive 2 x 24 Hour Licenses
* A 6 month year license will receive 1 x 24 Hour License

It's called an "Online" license because the software detects the license via the internet to validate it each time the computer starts. Once activated on a specific computer it will set to "Timing Enabled" for the remaining time each time the software starts. It will only work on that computer.

The license works on the Club and Nat/FIS software interchangeably. You may change to the other software any time and the license will continue.

To verify and to activate a license,and also for additional information, via the software menu go to Software License | 24 Hour Online License.

The 24 hours begins when the license is activated. In other words if activated at 3pm on Saturday it will be valid until 3pm Sunday.

You may restart the software as often as you like during the 24 hours.

You must be online each time the software is started for the license to be pulled from SplitSecond.com

A 24 hour license is not assigned to a particular entity or person. So, it may be given to someone else to use if you wish.
